This was a very sweet evening of true community theater. Hoover High School is maybe ten miles from Hollywood, but it might as well be in the middle of a Kansas cornfield for all the connection the “Stepping Stone Players” have to their Tinseltown neighbor. As I was leaving the theater the ticket lady at the door asked if I enjoyed the play, and I answered honestly that I very much did. She sweetly invited me to their next production -- a year from now, in September 2009 -- of “The Wizard of Oz.” Aww-ww.
The high school lady-in-waiting girls were just adorable with their dancing and singing. The leads were semi-pros from the area. The theater was vast, seating maybe a thousand, and there were only 40 or 50 of us. With 23 cast members, 20 in the pit orchestra and 12 production staffers, the event participants probably outnumbered the audience.
And let’s face it, the best one can say about “Once Upon A Mattress” is that it’s a cute play, based on “The Princess and the Pea.” No great life lessons shall be found herein, nor are any intended. It’s easy to see how the flamboyant slapstick role of Princess Winnifred helped make Carol Burnett a star back in the 50s.
Still, what a great learning opportunity! I only wish I had such a chance to participate in a pit orchestra during my high school, or put on a major musical in a thousand-seat theater.

A really fun show with a surprising and professional group of leads! I am not a huge fan of campy musicals such as this yet I had a great time from beginning to end. It is very well done.

The Stepping Stone Players put on a great performance of this comedic musical. The main characters were all very enjoyable, with phenomenal performances by the Queen, King, Princess, Minstrel, and Jester. I'd definitely recommend that you go see the show, but I believe t has already closed. Keep your eyes open for the next SSP production, though!

Great costumes and scenery. Both of the lead women characters were wonderful - good voices and acting skills. Others in the play were amateur but decent. Extra scenes added unnecessary length to the play and I felt it was because they wanted everyone to have a chance to showcase their talent, perhaps. Live orchestra was wonderful and humor was cute. All in all, I went to support a good cause. :)
