Anonymous Member Loved the venue, play was super, cast excellent.
theater snob This is the 2nd production I've seen at the Starlight Bowl and it's my last visit. The planes are just too much of an annoyance, but back to the show. I love Sondheim. I love "Into the Woods". I hated this production. The baker and his wife were quite notably good, but everyone else came off as mediocre or worse. The production values(set and costumes) looked cheap, and the late light cues did not help. The funniest part was watching the stagehand off stage left tip Milky White over then walk away into the wings for the next cue. One positive note though, the sound was better this time around. |

More Details About This Event: When a Baker and his Wife learn they've been cursed with childlessness by the Witch next door, they embark on a quest for the special objects required to break the spell, swindling, lying to and stealing from Cinderella, Little Red, Rapunzel and Jack (the one who climbed the beanstalk). Everyone's wish is granted at the end of Act One, but the consequences of their actions return to haunt them later, with disastrous results. What begins as a lively irreverent fantasy in the style of “The Princess Bride” becomes a moving lesson about community responsibility and the stories we tell our children.
About Starlight Theatre: Since its inception, Starlight has presented 59 seasons of musical theatre productions for the entertainment of more than four million San Diegans and visitors. These seasons have encompassed nearly 1000 productions of 120 different musicals, ranging from the operettas of Gilbert & Sullivan and Jacques Offenbach, the Rodgers & Hammerstein classics Carousel and South Pacific, favorites of the 50's and 60's such as West Side Story, Guys & Dolls, and Peter Pan, and the contemporary Broadway blockbusters A Chorus Line, Dreamgirls, Follies and Phantom of the Opera. About Starlight Bowl at Balboa Park: Balboa Park's beautiful outdoor amphitheater has been home to Starlight Musical Theatre's summer shows since the late 1940s -- but back then the actors didn't have to coordinate with airplane noise. The 4,000-seat bowl is in the flight path to Lindbergh Field, and it's a San Diego tradition for the actors to freeze in their pose in mid-song as the planes pass overhead. |
