Earplay new music ensemble’s 24th annual season opens with an engaging tapestry of an all-American program by Elliott Carter (New York), Pablo Furman (Bay Area), Jennifer Higdon (Philadelphia), William Kraft (Los Angeles) and Eric Zivian (Bay Area).
The Bay Area’s vibrant and diverse new music scene features the premiere of commissioned composer Eric Zivian’s bold and dashing Trio For Clarinet, Cello And Piano (Peter Josheff, Daniel Reiter, with the composer at the piano) along with the prominent San Jose composer, Pablo Furman, with his impassioned Sureña for violin (Graeme Jennings) and electronics.
Dark Wood by Jennifer Higdon with the edgy piano (Michael Seth Orland) part creating urban sounds with the dark woody sound of the bassoon (Rufus Olivier) floating above the tapestry created by the violin (Terrie Baune) and cello (Daniel Reiter). Three clever miniatures, Canon for Three Equal Instruments “In Memoriam Igor Stravinsky” (1971), Steep Steps (2001), and Au Quai (2002) offer a glimpse of Elliott Carter’s whimsy and humor. Completing the evening is William Kraft’s Vintage Renaissance and Beyond, inspired by the freshness of Renaissance and Middle Ages music, he carries the themes into the 21st century creating a rich tapestry of colors. Mary Chun conducts.
